Collection

Developing the different categories (Unexpected Use, Unexpected Relationships, Transfer Characteristics, Formal Similarities, Exaggeration, Shifting Focus, Mistake, Amateur) was part of my research process and an approach towards a definition of humor in images. Forums such as tumblr, twitter, instagram, pinterest and others served as sources for images, as did music videos, books and websites. The process of searching is reflected in the design of the index of the printed matter, which introduces each categorie with a booklet in a different size. The selected and arranged images aim to show variation in each category and their format is not only a formal aspect of order, but reflects upon its content. The exaggeration booklet, for example, is exaggeratedly large, while shifting focus, is very small, because it's about looking closely and discovering something at second glance. Images in the amateur category are framed in white, like in a small private photo album, while in the Formal similarities booklet different pictures talk to each other...
To enable new relationships between the images, no booklet is bound. All images can be rearranged by the viewer as desired.

In the beginning, there was the idea of a bound book with clear chapters and explanations, but in order to give the viewer more responsibility and to truly deserve the title " Humor beyond language", the concept was developed towards the collection.
